Ancient literature

arts Maturity 9-11 Next article →

Ancient literature is a huge collection of old writings. People wrote about many things. They wrote religious texts and science papers. They also wrote tales, poems, and plays. Some writing was for kings. These were laws or big speeches.

Long ago, people did not always write things down. They told stories out loud. These oral stories often did not survive. But some written works did stay. People used many different things to write. They used stone and clay tablets. They used papyrus, which is a plant paper. They even used palm leaves and metal.

Some old books are lost to time. We do not know how many. But many pieces remain. The earliest written stories date to about 2600 BC. These were Sumerian texts. One famous story is the Epic of Gilgamesh. It has versions from many different times. Another old text is the Egyptian Book of the Dead. It was written on papyrus. These old works help us learn about the past.
