They used a writing system called cuneiform. This system used marks on clay or stone. These writings date back thousands of years. They include many different kinds of works. Some were long stories about brave heroes. One famous hero was named Gilgamesh. Other stories were about gods or talking animals.

Sumerian writing had a musical feel. It did not use rhyme. Instead, it used patterns of sounds. This made the words sound like music. People often told these stories out loud. Some may have used musical instruments too.

Sumerians wrote about many things. They wrote laws to help people live together. They wrote letters to share news. They even wrote poems about debates. These poems showed a bird arguing with a fish. They showed winter arguing with summer. Students even studied lists of words to learn. These old texts helped shape later writing. They are a big part of our history.
