The Sumerians used a system called cuneiform. This was one of the first ways people ever wrote. They made marks to record their thoughts and laws. Most of these texts were written in the Sumerian language. Students would copy these texts to learn how to write. This helped spread literacy among many people.

This way of writing began a very long time ago.

The Sumerians developed cuneiform by the 30th century BC. Most of these records come from the 3rd and 2nd millennia BC. This was during a time called the Middle Bronze Age. Even after people stopped speaking Sumerian, they still used it for writing. It stayed in use for official and literary purposes. This helped the stories last for many centuries.

There were many different kinds of Sumerian writing.

Some were long myths about heroes like Gilgamesh. Other texts were legal documents like the Code of Ur-Nammu. They also wrote funny poems called disputation poems. These poems featured debates between things like birds and fish. They even wrote proverbs and letters to each other. Some texts were lists called literary catalogs. These included a set of ten texts called the Decad.

Sumerian writing had a very special sound.

The poems did not use rhyme like we do today. Instead, they used patterns of similar sounds in the words. These patterns of vowels and consonants made the language sound musical. Many stories were told out loud to others. Some might have even used musical instruments during a performance. These old patterns influenced how later Babylonian literature was written. It shows how much people valued the beauty of words.
