People tell these stories in many ways. They use Spanish and Portuguese. They also use many local languages.

Long ago, many cultures shared stories by speaking. The Mayans and Aztecs used drawings to record history. The Incas used knots called Quipu to keep records. These old ways still live on today.

Later, new styles began to grow. In the 1800s, writers used Romanticism to talk about their homes. Some women writers used books to fight for rights. They wrote about the lives of women and indigenous people.

At the end of the 1800s, a new style called Modernismo arrived. It was the first style to spread far outside Latin America.
