French writers have won many big awards. The Nobel Prize in Literature is a very famous prize. France has more Nobel winners than any other country. As of 2022, fifteen French authors won this prize. One writer, Jean-Paul Sartre, even turned it down. He did not want to be seen as just an institution.

In France, schools teach many kinds of writing. Students study novels, plays, and poetry. They even learn poems by heart. The state helps pay for these arts. Winning a literary prize is big news on TV.
