technology Maturity 9-11 Next article →

A boulevard is a very wide road. Many boulevards have rows of trees. In North America, they can be big highways. These roads are often in busy business areas.

In Europe, these roads have a long history. They often follow the lines of old city walls. In France, the word comes from a Dutch word. It used to mean the flat top of a rampart. A rampart is a strong wall used for defense. Later, people used these spots for a promenade. A promenade is a place built for walking.

In North America, boulevards can be very large. They may have many lanes for cars. A central median often divides the lanes. A median is a strip in the middle of the road.

Many famous cities have boulevards. In France, there is Boulevard des Italiens. In the United States, Los Angeles has Sunset Boulevard. In India, there is Mahatma Gandhi Road. You can find these wide roads all over the world.
