This includes buildings like homes and offices. It also includes public infrastructure. Infrastructure is the set of parts that help a city work. This includes roads, highways, and parks.

Roads act like veins in a body. They move people and goods around a city. Public transit, like buses, also helps people move. Even farms are part of this. In the U.S., farms use about 52% of the land.

Long ago, people started making permanent homes. This happened about 12,000 years ago. Later, the Industrial Revolution changed things. Factories grew very fast. This made cities much bigger. People moved from farms to cities for jobs. This caused new problems like noise and pollution. To fix this, leaders started the City Beautiful movement. They wanted better parks and cleaner streets. Later, cars changed how we live. We built freeways to help cars travel fast. This led to suburbs. Suburbs are areas outside of big cities. Now, the built environment affects our health. It can help us stay active or make it hard to walk. Our surroundings shape how we live every day.
