Planners decide how to use land. They plan for roads, water, and power. They also think about how people live, work, and play.

This work is very old. Long ago, people in Egypt and the Indus Valley planned cities. They used a grid pattern. This means streets met at right angles. In Greece, a man named Hippodamus of Miletus was a famous planner. People call him the father of European urban planning. The Romans also used grids to help with defense and travel.

In the 1800s, cities grew very fast because of factories. This made life hard for many poor workers. Planners began to find ways to make cities healthier. In Paris, Baron Haussmann made wide, straight streets. Later, planners like Jane Jacobs said we must listen to the people living in cities. Today, planners work to fight climate change. They help people use bikes and buses instead of cars.
