Long ago, people used city walls to separate areas. They kept loud or smelly jobs outside the walls. Inside the walls, people lived and visited holy places. This idea was used in many places, like ancient China and Rome.

Today, there are different ways to use zoning. One way is called single-use zoning. This keeps homes, shops, and factories in separate areas. This is very common in the United States. Another way is mixed-use zoning. This puts homes, offices, and shops close together. This can make a city easy to walk in.
