The built environment is a way to describe everything humans make.

It is not just the buildings we see. It includes the spaces where we live, work, and play. This term covers cities, roads, and even parks. It also includes things like farmlands and dammed rivers. Some people even say that managed forests are part of it. These curated spaces are made to meet human needs and desires. They provide the setting for almost everything we do every day.

How does this environment work? It is made of many different parts that work together. Buildings are a major part of this system. They can be used for homes, shops, or government offices.

Public infrastructure is another key piece. Roads and highways act like the veins in a body. They move people and materials through a city just like blood moves oxygen. Sidewalks and paths help people walk safely. Public transportation, like buses, helps many different types of people move around. Even farming is a part of this, using about 52% of land in the U.S.

Humans have been changing the land for a very long time. About 12,000 years ago, people started the Neolithic Revolution. This was when they began farming crops and raising animals.

This allowed people to make permanent homes instead of moving all the time. The first cities appeared around 7500 BCE in fertile areas. As time went on, these small villages grew into large cities. People moved from just surviving to wanting more comfort. The term "built environment" was finally coined in the 1980s. It became a very common idea during the 1990s.

History shows how much our surroundings have changed. During the Industrial Revolution, cities grew very fast.

Between the 1880s and early 1900s, many people moved to cities for factory jobs. This caused problems like noise, pollution, and crowded living spaces. In the 1890s, the City Beautiful movement tried to fix this. It focused on better sanitation and public spaces. Later, in the 1920s, Henry Ford helped make cars more common. In 1956, the first freeways were built to help with traffic. This allowed people to live in suburbs far from city centers.

Our built environment has a huge impact on our lives. It can change how healthy we are. In the 1850s, planners in Paris worked to improve air and cleanliness.

Today, the way a city is built can affect our health. Some places make it easy to walk or bike. Other places, like some suburbs, rely mostly on cars. This can make it harder to stay active or find healthy food. Our surroundings shape how we move, how we feel, and how we live together.
