Physical activity is any movement made by your skeletal muscles that uses energy.

It is much more than just exercise. While exercise is a special type of movement, it is planned and repetitive to improve fitness. Physical activity includes all other ways we move throughout the day. This can be unplanned or random, like cleaning your home or walking to a shop.

These everyday movements are part of our daily routines. Even simple tasks like working or using active transport count as physical activity.

Movement happens at many different levels of intensity. Scientists use a measure called metabolic equivalents, or METs, to group these levels. The first level is sedentary behavior, which includes sitting or lying down. Next is light physical activity, such as slow walking or shuffling. Moderate activity includes things like jogging or climbing stairs. The highest level is vigorous activity, like fast running or sprinting.

An activity might even change from one level to another. Your intensity depends on what you are doing and how you feel.

Moving your body is a key way to regulate body weight. It can also improve your mental, cognitive, and cardiovascular health. Being inactive can lead to many non-communicable diseases. These are illnesses that are not caught from other people. Examples include heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

In fact, 500 million new cases of disease could occur globally by 2030 if activity levels do not change. This could cost over US$300 billion in medical treatments.

Researchers have studied how movement helps different people. For example, walking can help people with anxiety or depression. Strenuous gymnastics or riding can help those with other specific mental health needs. Even exercising at home can help families stay strong and resilient.

In 2019, nature-based activity in England saved about £108.7 million in healthcare costs. This shows how much moving in the outdoors can help a whole country. Staying active is a vital part of public health.

Experts provide specific goals to help people stay healthy. For children aged 5 to 17, the goal is 60 minutes of movement every day. For adults, the World Health Organization suggests different amounts. Adults aged 18 to 64 should aim for 150 minutes of moderate activity each week. They could also do 75 minutes of vigorous activity instead.

As of 2024, 31% of adults do not meet these recommended levels. Moving more helps everyone stay well.
