Private transport

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Private transport is how people move using their own choices. It is different from public transport, which is for the general public. When you use private transport, you decide when to leave. You also pick the specific route you want to take. This gives you a lot of freedom while you travel.

Many people around the world use these personal ways to get around.

There are many ways this type of travel works. Some methods use motors to move the vehicle. You might ride in an automobile or a motorcycle. You could even use a private jet or a motorboat. Other ways do not use motors at all. These are called non-motorized methods. You can walk, ride a bicycle, or use a skateboard.

Even animals like horses can be used for private travel.

History shows us many different types of private tools. An old illustration from 1922 shows many examples. It shows things like a biplane and a hot-air balloon. You can see a rowing boat and a wheelbarrow too. It also shows a horse-drawn carriage and a limousine.

These items show how much travel has changed over time. People have always found new ways to move themselves.

Private transport is a huge part of how we live. In the United States, it is used very often. About 86.2% of passenger miles are done this way. This includes trips in passenger vehicles, motorcycles, and trucks.

Most of the cost is paid by the person using it. However, some scholars say the cost of roads is also a big part. This is because private trips rely on the infrastructure built for them.

Some ways to move are better for our planet. Walking and cycling are very sustainable systems. This means they are good for the world to keep. These methods use muscle power to move the person. This makes them very efficient with energy. They also produce almost no emissions from breathing.
