Paratransit is a special kind of public transport. Most buses follow a set path and a set schedule. Paratransit is different because it does not use fixed routes. It provides individualized rides for people who need extra help.

This service helps people travel when regular buses are not an option. It acts as a supplement to the main transit system. It makes sure more people can get where they need to go.

These services can work in many different ways. Some systems use a small bus that follows a loose path. They stop to pick up or drop off passengers on request. Other systems are fully demand-responsive. This means they offer door-to-door service from any starting point to any destination.

In the United States, many agencies use minibuses for this work. Most of these vehicles have wheelchair lifts or ramps. These tools make it easy for people to board the vehicle.

Laws in the United States helped shape how this works. The Rehabilitation Act of 1973 was a very important law. It said that people with disabilities could not be left out of programs that get federal money. Later, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, or ADA, made these rules even stronger.

The ADA requires transit groups to provide special rides for certain people. This includes those who cannot use the regular bus system. It also covers people with temporary injuries that make travel hard.

There are many interesting facts about how these services change. In Solano County, California, the county tried a new way in 2010. They let passengers buy $100 of taxi rides for only $15. This helped people avoid booking trips a week in advance. In 2016, the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority started a pilot program. They helped pay for rides on services like Uber and Lyft. This lowered the average trip cost from $35 down to just $9.

Paratransit looks different depending on where you live in the world. In developed countries, these systems are usually very organized and structured. In developing countries, it is often called intermediate public transport. This version is often informal and helps people travel quickly and cheaply.

For many people, these vehicles are the only way to travel with a motor. In some places, driving a small vehicle like an autorickshaw can even help a person earn a living. It is a vital part of how many communities move every day.
