Public transport is a way for many people to travel together.

These systems use fixed routes and schedules to move people. Most systems charge a standardized fare to cover their operating costs. Sometimes, governments provide extra public funding to help out. There are many different ways to move through a city or country. You might ride a city bus, a tram, or a ferry.

Some people even use rapid transit systems or passenger trains. These different ways to travel are often called modes of transport.

How these systems work depends on the type of vehicle used. Buses often travel on regular roads and use inexpensive stops. Some cities use coaches for longer journeys between different towns.

Many people use multimodal travel to finish a trip. This means they might walk or take a feeder bus to reach a train station. This way of traveling helps people reach their final destination.

People have been finding ways to move together for a very long time. The earliest public transport was actually water transport. In ancient Egypt, canals helped move goods past the Aswan cataract.

The first organized city bus system appeared in Paris in 1662. Later, George Stephenson built the first public steam railway in 1825.

In 1863, London opened the world's first steam-powered underground railway. Electric streetcars arrived later and helped make travel much cheaper.

Different parts of the world use transport in different ways. In Japan, private companies often run urban transit networks. These companies sometimes work with real estate development to stay successful.

In North America, transit is usually run by local or regional authorities. These authorities use fares and taxes to pay for the service. Europe uses a mix of state-owned and private operators. The International Association of Public Transport has over 1,900 members. These members live in more than 100 different countries.

Today, many engineers are working to make transport better for the Earth. They are moving toward sustainability by using electric vehicles.

Using electric buses can reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 65 percent. This is a big change from using fossil fuel buses. To reach net zero emissions by 2050, many goals must be met. For example, over 75 percent of bus sales should be electric by 2030. This shift helps protect the atmosphere and the water.

Helping the planet is a very important part of modern travel.
