Transport hub

technology Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A transport hub is a special place where travel happens. It is a spot where passengers or cargo change vehicles.

People might switch from a bus to a train at these locations. These spots help move things from one path to another. Public hubs include many different things like railway stations and airports. They also include bus stops, tram stops, and ferry slips.

Even a parking lot can be a simple hub for cars.

There are different ways these hubs work for people and goods. For passengers, a hub often acts as a transfer point. This means you might take one vehicle and then switch to another.

Airports do this in two main ways. First, they gather many travelers in one central place. This makes it easier to send them to new locations. Second, some airports serve as airline hubs for specific companies. These airlines use a hub and spoke system to connect many different flights.

History shows us how these systems grew over time. In 1955, Delta Air Lines started the hub and spoke model. They used their hub in Atlanta, Georgia, to compete with others.

Later, FedEx used this same model for overnight packages in the 1970s. When the airline industry in the U.S. changed in 1978, many others followed Delta's lead. Before this, some airlines used "through plane" flights. This meant one plane flew a long trip with different crews.

Many famous airlines used these old through plane services. These included names like Pan Am, United Airlines, and Delta Air Lines.

Other companies like American Airlines and TWA also took part. In the past, these flights appeared on many different system timetables. Freight hubs also have specific names based on how they work. There are water-road hubs and water-rail hubs, also called inland ports. You can also find road-rail hubs or even combinations of all three.

Connecting these hubs makes the whole world move more easily. Modern tools like electronic journey planners help us navigate them. These digital tools show all the stops and hubs in a network.

This helps people plan trips that require a transfer. Using many types of travel, like ships and trucks, is called intermodal transport. This way of moving goods is very efficient. It can even be cheaper to move things in many small steps than in one long trip.
