Airport terminal

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

An airport terminal is a main building used for travel. It is the place where people switch from ground travel to airplanes.

Passengers use these buildings to board a plane or leave one after a flight. In small airports, one building might do everything. Larger airports often have several terminals or concourses. A concourse is a building that gives people access to the airplanes through gates. Some airports use unit terminals to keep things organized. For example, one terminal might handle only international flights. Another might belong to a specific airline.

Terminals work by performing three main jobs. First, they help people move from cars or buses to the planes. This is called passenger circulation. Second, they handle the processing of people and their luggage. This includes checking in for a flight and passing through security checks. Third, they help group passengers together for their specific flights.

When you arrive, the terminal does these things in reverse. It provides a place for passengers to wait after they land. This helps everyone move smoothly through the airport.

Every terminal is divided into two main zones. The landside zone is where you check in for your trip. The airside zone is the area where the planes are located.

To get from the landside to the airside, you must pass through security or customs. This boundary is a very important part of how an airport is built. While landside tasks like check-in stay mostly the same, the airside changes quickly. This is because new technology and new ways of working happen there often. Architects must plan carefully to manage these two different worlds.

Terminals have a long and interesting history. In the early 1900s, airfields did not even have terminals. People built large sheds to protect fragile airships from the weather. The first passenger buildings appeared later at air shows. In the United States, early airports often used a hangar-depot style. This meant staff, passengers, and planes were all in one large building. An example is the Ford Dearborn Airport from 1925. Later, dedicated buildings like the Art Deco terminal at Chicago's Midway Airport appeared in 1931.

Architects use terminals to show off beautiful and new styles. Some terminals look like simple glass boxes. Others are huge and grand, like the Denver International Airport. Some even reflect the local culture of their area. The Albuquerque International Sunport uses the Pueblo Revival style.

The TWA Flight Center is another famous architectural masterpiece. Many modern airports now use clever designs to stay organized. For instance, London Stansted Airport puts baggage systems in the basement. This creates a large, open space for people to move through easily.
