An airport terminal is a main building at an airport.

It is where people switch from ground travel to planes. People use it to board a flight or leave one.

Terminals do three main jobs. First, they help people move from cars or buses to planes. This is called passenger circulation. Second, they help with check-in. This is when you give your bags to the airline. Workers also check your bags and your safety. Third, they help group people together for their flights.

Large airports often have many buildings. These can be unit terminals. A unit terminal might serve only one airline. It might also handle only international flights. You might use a small train to move between them.

Terminals are split into two zones. The landside zone is where you check in. The airside zone is where the planes are. You must pass through security to reach the airside.

Architects use terminals to show off new styles. Some look like glass boxes. Others are very large and grand. The TWA Flight Center is a famous example.
