People and groups gather there to share interests. They might talk about new ideas or show off products. These buildings must have a lot of floor space. This allows them to hold several thousand people at once. Very large venues are sometimes called exhibition halls.

These centers work by providing many different rooms. Most have at least one auditorium for big talks. They may also have concert halls or lecture halls. Smaller meeting rooms help groups talk in private. Some centers are built inside large hotels. These are called convention hotels because they offer lodging. Other centers sit near hotels but do not have beds.

Long ago, meeting halls were found in castles. Lords and knights met there with kings. A king might use a great hall to act as a judge. This helped him show his wisdom to the people. In France, a famous meeting mistake happened in 1789. King Louis XVI locked a group out of a hall in Versailles. This group moved to an indoor tennis court to meet. This led to the French Revolution.

Many famous halls have been built over many years. The Royal Exhibition Building in Melbourne hosted a World's Fair in 1880. The Crystal Palace in London was a famous hall too. In the 1900s, the Grand Palais opened in Paris. The Las Vegas Convention Center opened in 1959. The McCormick Place in Chicago opened in 1960. These places show how much these buildings have changed.

Convention centers connect to many things you know. You might visit a museum or a theater. Some meeting spaces are actually inside those buildings. Large stadiums and parks can also hold big groups. Even a university might have halls for large meetings. These buildings help the world stay connected through sharing.
