Observatory

space Maturity 11-13 Next article →

An observatory is a special place for watching our world. Scientists use them to study many different things. Some watch the stars and planets in space. Others study the weather, the deep ocean, or even volcanoes.

These locations help us collect data about how our planet and the universe work. They are important for many different types of science.

Astronomical observatories work in many different ways. Ground-based ones sit on the surface of the Earth. Many use optical telescopes inside a protective dome. This dome has a slit in the roof that opens to the sky. The whole dome can rotate so the telescope sees different parts of space.

Radio observatories are different because they use radio waves instead of visible light. They often sit in valleys to block out interference from TV and radar signals.

People have been using observatories for a very long time. Some of the oldest sites are very ancient stone structures. These include Stonehenge in Great Britain and sites in Egypt and Peru. The first true research institutes appeared much later in history. The Al-Shammisiyyah Observatory in Baghdad was built in the year 825. In 1675, the Royal Greenwich Observatory was established in England. Many more were built throughout the 1700s and 1800s across the globe.

Finding the right spot for an observatory is a hard job. Modern ground sites need dark skies and very dry air. They are often built on high mountains to get above the thick air. This helps the view stay clear and steady.

Some of the best places are in Hawaii and Chile. A study from 2009 says Ridge A in Antarctica is the best spot on Earth. This is because it has the least amount of air movement to blur the view.

Some observatories do not stay on the ground at all. Space-based observatories like the Hubble Space Telescope orbit the Earth.

They can see light that Earth's atmosphere blocks, like X-rays. They take very sharp pictures because there is no air to cause shaking. However, they are very expensive and hard to fix. Other tools fly in airplanes, such as the SOFIA observatory.

These are easier and cheaper to repair than tools in space.
