An observatory is a place used to study our world.

People use them to watch the stars, the weather, or the ocean. Some observatories look at the sky. These are called astronomical observatories.

Many of these sit on the ground. Most use optical telescopes to see light. These telescopes often live inside a dome. The dome has a slit in the roof. It opens so the tool can see the sky. The dome can also spin. This lets the tool look at different parts of the night.

Ground sites need dark skies. They also need dry air and high mountains. High places help because the air is thinner there. This makes the view much clearer.

Some tools fly in space. The Hubble Space Telescope is one example.

Space tools see things that Earth's air blocks. They can see X-rays and other light. They also take very sharp pictures. However, they are hard to fix. Other tools fly in airplanes. One is called SOFIA.

Airborne tools are easier to repair than space tools.
