A space telescope is a tool used to look at space.

These tools work in outer space. They do not sit on the ground. This helps them avoid many problems. Earth has an atmosphere. This is the layer of air around our planet. The air can block some light. It can also make stars twinkle.

Space telescopes can see light that the air blocks. This includes X-rays and ultraviolet light. They can even see dim objects during the day. They also avoid light pollution from cities.

Lyman Spitzer suggested putting telescopes in space in 1946. He wanted to avoid the Earth's air. Later, Nancy Grace Roman helped make the Hubble Space Telescope a reality. She worked hard to show why it was worth the cost.

Space telescopes are very expensive to build. They are also hard to fix. Most cannot be serviced at all. Some, like Hubble, were fixed by the Space Shuttle.
