An airport is a busy place for air travel.

It is a special kind of aerodrome with many extra tools. Most airports have a landing area for planes. This area includes a runway for taking off and landing. Some places also have a helipad for helicopters.

Large airports have many more things. They might have taxiway bridges or special control centres. They also have many places for people to wait and eat. Airports are very important for tourism and moving goods. They also provide jobs for many people in their towns.

Airports work through a complex system of services.

First, planes land on the paved runway. Next, they move to an apron or ramp. This is the area where planes park to load people and bags.

Passengers use a terminal to check in. Many people board the plane using a movable tunnel. These tunnels lead directly from the building to the aircraft door. This whole way it works requires careful control to keep everyone safe. Security teams use X-ray machines and metal detectors to check bags.

People have been using these spaces for a long time. The word aeroplane first appeared in the 1870s. This was many years before the Wright brothers flew in 1903. Today, the word airport often means a very large facility. In some places, it is a legal name for a licensed site. Not all airfields are called airports. Some small airfields have runways shorter than 1,000 meters.

Large airports usually have much longer paved runways. The US has about 15,095 of these sites. The CIA said there are about 44,000 such places worldwide.

Running an airport costs a lot of money.

Airports earn money in three main ways. Aeronautical revenue comes from airline rents and landing fees. A landing fee is a charge for an aircraft to land. The cost depends on the weight and size of the plane. For example, John F. Kennedy airport charges $45 per hour for a 100,000-pound plane. Non-aeronautical revenue comes from shops and restaurants.

Many people also pay for car parking. In Chicago, O'Hare International Airport charges $2 per hour for cars.

Airports are split into two main zones. The landside is the public part of the airport. You can find check-in desks and shops here. The airside is a controlled zone for travel.

Only people with boarding passes or staff passes can enter. This helps keep the flying area safe. Airports also move cargo, which is goods sent by plane. They work around the clock to move these items. This is just like how a post office works for your mail.
