An airport is a highly specialized aerodrome with extended facilities designed for commercial air transport.

While the terms aerodrome, airfield, and airstrip are often used interchangeably, an airport usually implies a higher level of stature or service. In many legal jurisdictions, "airport" is a specific term of art. It refers only to aerodromes that have been officially certified or licensed by a civil aviation authority. This means that while all airports are aerodromes, not all aerodromes qualify as airports. These facilities serve as vital hubs for global tourism, transit, and commerce. They also act as major employers for the surrounding regions.

Airport operations function through a complex, interconnected system of services.

The process begins in the landing area, which includes an operationally active surface like a runway. A runway is the paved strip used by aircraft to take off and land. Once a plane lands, it moves to an apron, also known as a ramp. The apron is the specific area where aircraft park to load or unload passengers and baggage.

Passengers typically move from the terminal to the plane via a movable tunnel. These tunnels connect the building directly to the aircraft's entry door to ensure a smooth transition.

To manage these movements, airports are divided into two distinct zones: landside and airside. The landside is the public realm and is subject to fewer special laws. It contains facilities like check-in desks, ground transportation, and public shops. In contrast, the airside is a tightly controlled zone.

Access to the airside is strictly limited to passengers with valid boarding passes, aircrew with identification, and authorized airport staff. This division is essential for maintaining high levels of security and safety.

Security is a critical component of modern airport management.

Standard procedures include baggage checks and metal screenings of individuals to prevent the transport of weapons. Airports utilize advanced technology, such as X-ray machines and metal detectors, to monitor items. These security measures have become significantly stricter and more intense following the September 11 attacks and the implementation of the Real ID Act of 2005. Beyond security, airports must also manage environmental impacts, such as air and noise pollution, and remain resilient against extreme weather and climate change.

Historically, the concept of flight has evolved alongside these facilities. The word "aeroplane" emerged in the 1870s, decades before the Wright brothers achieved successful flight in 1903. Today, the scale of aviation is massive. The CIA reported approximately 44,000 recognizable airports or airfields worldwide. The United States contains the highest number of these facilities, with 15,095 recorded. While many small airfields have runways shorter than 1,000 meters, major commercial airports maintain much longer, paved runways to accommodate heavy jets.

Maintaining these massive infrastructures requires diverse revenue streams.

Airport revenue is categorized into three parts: aeronautical, non-aeronautical, and non-operating revenue. In 2021, aeronautical revenue accounted for 50% of total income. This includes landing fees, which are charged per aircraft based on its weight and size. For instance, John F. Kennedy Airport in New York City charges $45 per hour for a plane weighing 100,000 pounds. Non-aeronautical revenue, which made up 34% of revenue in 2021, comes from retail, restaurants, and parking.

Large airports often act as local monopolies, so governments use price-cap regulation to prevent them from abusing market power.

Airports also function as essential logistics centers for moving cargo.

Cargo airlines often utilize on-site infrastructure to transfer parcels between ground vehicles and aircraft. International airports feature specialized cargo terminal facilities. These areas allow for the storage of goods after they have cleared customs. Import cargo is kept "in bond" until the receiver decides to take delivery. This constant movement of freight ensures that global supply chains remain active around the clock.
