When you think of planes, you might imagine huge jets. However, most air traffic is actually general aviation.

This term covers almost all civil flying. It excludes big commercial air transport and scheduled airlines. It also excludes some specialized aerial work. Still, groups like the ICAO use it for many statistics. This kind of flying makes up the majority of world air traffic.

General aviation works in many different ways. Some people use it for private travel or business. This is called corporate or business aviation. Others fly for pure fun or air sports. They might do aerobatics or join air races. Some people use planes for fractional ownership. This means a company manages one plane for several owners. You can even fly gliders that have no engine.

Specialized jobs are often called aerial work. This includes many important tasks for people. Pilots might fly to spread seeds on farms. They can do photography or survey the land. Some fly to find lost people during search and rescue. They might even transport organs for doctors. Other jobs include firefighting or skydiving. These tasks use many types of aircraft like helicopters.

This world of flying is very large. In the United Kingdom, 96 percent of civil aircraft are general aviation. There are 28,000 private pilot license holders there. In North America, there are over 6,300 public airports. About 5,200 of these are in the United States. Over 1,000 are in Canada. In the U.S., this industry provides 1.3 million jobs. It even makes up more than one percent of the GDP.

Safety is a big focus for these pilots. Most countries have a special authority to watch over them. In Europe, the European Aviation Safety Agency helps with this. In the United Kingdom, the Civil Aviation Authority sets the rules. They focus on pilot licenses and plane safety. Flying can be done by sight or by instruments. This allows pilots to use many different types of airspace. It is a huge and busy part of our world.
