Aircraft registration

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Every civil aircraft in the sky needs a special code. This code is called an aircraft registration.

It works very much like a license plate on a car. The code tells people which country the aircraft belongs to.

An aircraft can only have one registration in one place at a time. However, a plane can get a new code if it is sold or moves to a new country. This code must also be written on a legal paper called a Certificate of Registration.

There is a specific way these codes are made. First, a prefix is chosen from a list of letters for a country.

This prefix is a quick way to see where the plane is from. After the prefix, there is a suffix made of letters or numbers. This suffix can have one to five characters. In some countries, a dash separates the prefix and the suffix. In the United States or Japan, they are often joined together without a dash.

People have been using these codes for a long time. The first use was based on radio callsigns from a meeting in 1913. Later, the Paris Convention of 1919 made these marks specifically for aircraft. These rules changed again during a meeting in Washington in 1927. Since 1947, a group called the International Civil Aviation Organization has managed these standards. They make sure everyone follows the same rules for international flying.

Different countries have their own special rules for these marks. In the United States, they are called "N" numbers.

This is because every U.S. plane starts with the letter N. The U.S. system uses many numbers and letters to make 915,399 possible codes. They do not use the letters I or O because they look too much like numbers. Some older planes from before 1949 even have an extra letter to show what kind of plane they are.

These codes help us understand how the world stays connected. For example, a plane might be registered in a different country if a bank helped pay for it.

Even when countries change or become independent, they use these systems to keep track of their skies. Some planes, like gliders, might even use different groups of marks.

Whether it is a huge jet or a small glider, the code keeps it known.
