Airline hub

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

An airline hub is a very busy airport. One or more airlines use it to group their flights together. This is known as the hub-and-spoke system.

Think of a bicycle wheel. The hub is the center part. The spokes are the lines that go out from the center. Airlines fly from smaller cities, called spokes, to the hub airport. Passengers then connect at the hub to reach their final destination. This way of working helps airlines serve many cities without needing a direct flight between every single pair.

This system works in a specific way to move people. First, many flights arrive at the hub from different spoke cities. These arrivals often happen in groups called banks. These banks create peaks of high activity at the airport.

After the planes land, passengers get off and move through the terminal. They then board new planes that are ready to depart. This allows for short connection times for travelers. Some airlines use a rolling hub instead. In a rolling hub, arrivals and departures are spread out all day. This is also called depeaking. It can lower costs, but it makes connection times longer.

History shows how these systems began to grow. Before 1978, most United States airlines used a point-to-point system. This meant they flew directly between cities without using a central hub. The Civil Aeronautics Board used to control which routes airlines could fly. However, some airlines began to experiment with new ways to fly. Delta Air Lines was the first to use a hub-and-spoke system. They used Atlanta as a hub to reach remote spoke cities. After the industry was deregulated in 1978, many other airlines started their own networks.

There are many different kinds of hubs in the world. Some airports are cargo hubs used for moving goods. FedEx Express started its Memphis Superhub in 1973. UPS Airlines uses a similar system at its Louisville Worldport.

Other airports are called fortress hubs. This is when one airline dominates a market. It can be very hard for other airlines to compete there. In the United States, Delta dominates Atlanta. American Airlines is strong at Dallas/Fort Worth. United Airlines is a major player at Newark Liberty.

Hubs connect to the way we travel every day. For example, Qatar Airways uses Doha Airport as a huge hub. By March 2020, it had 471 daily movements to 140 destinations. This allowed for around 30 million connecting passengers in 2019. Some hubs are also used as stopover points between continents. Large hubs in the Middle East help people travel between Europe and Asia. These busy airports change how the whole world stays connected. They make it possible to reach far-off places with just one stop.
