It is also the fifth-busiest airport in the world for passengers.

Moving planes through the sky is a careful process.

First, planes fly to one of four holding points. These are like waiting rooms in the sky. Air traffic controllers in Swanwick guide the planes to their final approach. They merge the planes into a single stream of traffic. Sometimes, the planes fly very close to each other. To help the environment, planes often use a continuous descent approach. This helps them glide down more smoothly.

Heathrow has a long and changing history.

It started as a small airfield back in 1930. The airport opened officially on 25 March 1946. At that time, it was simply called London Airport. It was renamed Heathrow Airport in September 1966. This change helped avoid confusion with Gatwick and Stansted airports. After World War II, the site grew much larger. In the 1950s, the airport actually had six different runways. Today, it uses two parallel east-west runways instead.

There are many important numbers to know about this place.
