Public transport, also known as mass transit or public transit, is a system of movement designed for the general public.

These systems operate using fixed routes and specific schedules to ensure predictability. Most services charge a standardized fare to help cover their operating costs. In many cases, governments provide extra public funding to support these networks. While there is no single universal definition, these systems are essential for urban and regional mobility. They allow many people to move through space efficiently using shared infrastructure.

To function effectively, public transport relies on specific mechanisms and coordination. Most services operate along fixed corridors with designated boarding points. These points are often called stops or stations. Systems use published timetables so that passengers know when to arrive. High-frequency services often prioritize regular headways, which are the consistent intervals between vehicles. This allows for predictable operations even if exact departure times vary slightly. Many trips also involve multimodal travel. This means a person might walk or use a feeder bus to reach a larger rail station.

There are many different modes of transport used in these systems. City buses are common because they use existing roads and inexpensive stops. Some cities use larger vehicles like articulated buses or double-decker buses to increase capacity. For longer distances, coaches provide intercity service with comfortable seating and luggage compartments. Rail systems include trams, also known as light rail, and rapid transit systems. Ferries provide water-based transport, while airlines handle long-distance air travel. In some areas, demand-responsive services like share taxis offer more flexibility than fixed routes.

Humanity has been developing public transit for thousands of years. The earliest forms were water-based, such as ferries. Ancient Egyptians used canals to move freight past the Aswan cataract. In China, the Grand Canal began in 486 BCE to serve the grain trade. The first organized city bus system appeared in Paris in 1662. Later, George Stephenson built the first public steam railway in 1825. The world's first steam-powered underground railway opened in London in 1863. By 1888, the first successful electric streetcar operated in Tallahassee, Florida. This technology allowed for heavier loads and lower fares.

Global transit models vary significantly based on geography and economics. In Japan, many urban networks are run by private, profit-oriented companies. These companies often integrate transit with real estate development for financial sustainability. In North America, municipal or regional authorities typically manage mass transit. They fund services through a mix of fares, local taxes, and government subsidies. European countries use a combination of state-owned enterprises and private operators. The International Association of Public Transport (UITP) supports these global efforts. It has more than 1,900 members across over 100 countries.

When choosing how to travel, people consider several key criteria. These include speed, comfort, safety, cost, proximity, timeliness, and directness. Speed is measured by the total journey time, including any necessary transfers. Proximity refers to how far a passenger must walk to reach a stop. Timeliness measures how long a person must wait for a vehicle. Directness looks at how much a route deviates from an ideal path. While private transport offers more control, public transport can be more cost-effective. Many people also value the ability to rest or work during a journey.

Modern engineering is now focusing on sustainability and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. This involves a massive shift toward electric vehicles (EVs). The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) states that zero-emission buses can reduce greenhouse gas outflows by 65%. This transition is vital for protecting the atmosphere, biosphere, and hydrosphere. To reach net-zero emissions by 2050, a specific goal must be met. Over 75% of all bus sales should be electric by the year 2030. This shift requires engineers to redesign power grids and depot logistics.
