A park and ride is a special way to travel.

These are parking lots with connections to public transport. They help people heading to city centers. Drivers leave their vehicles in the lot during the day. Then, they transfer to a bus or a rail system. This might include light rail or commuter rail. People can also use a carpool for the rest of the trip. The owner retrieves their car when they return home.

This system works in a few different ways. Most lots are in suburbs or on the edges of large cities. Some lots are just for carpooling and are called park and pool.

In some places, transit operators use these lots to encourage better driving. They might save spaces for cars with low emissions. They also save spots for high-occupancy vehicles or carsharing. Some large facilities even have extra services. You might find a food shop, a car wash, or a cafeteria there. Some places even have passenger waiting areas and toilets.

History shows us how these ideas grew. Bus park and ride services began in the UK in the 1960s. Oxford ran the very first scheme. It started as an experimental service at a motel on the A34. Later, it became a full-time service in 1973. In 1978, a company called Better Choice Parking offered a service at London Gatwick Airport.

Oxford now has five dedicated lots. As of 2015, it had the biggest urban network in the UK. This network has 5,031 car parking spaces.

Many cities use different rules to make these work. In Stockholm, Sweden, a tax helps people use park and ride. This tax is on free or cheap parking paid by an employer. A congestion tax in Stockholm also helps. In Prague, there are about 17 parks near 12 metro stations and 3 train stations.

These lots in Prague offer low prices. They often include the fare for public transport in the ticket. In the United States, outlying rail stations often have hundreds of parking spaces.

There are many ways to connect to these lots. Some people use a bike and ride system. This uses cycle racks near the transport terminals.

Other people use a kiss and ride area. This is a spot where cars stop briefly to drop off passengers. The name comes from a 1956 report in the Los Angeles Times. It describes a person being driven to a station by a partner. They might kiss goodbye before catching a train. This is common in many places like Italy, Taiwan, and Poland.
