You can attach your bike to these stands using a lock. Some racks stand on their own in the middle of a space. Other racks are bolted firmly to the ground or a building.

People use indoor racks for private storage at home. Outdoor racks are very common in busy commercial areas. Choosing the right material is important for these tools. Most racks are made of steel or stainless steel. Some are even made from recycled plastic or thermoplastic. These materials help the rack stay strong against the weather.

How a rack works depends on its design and shape. The best racks let you lock both the wheels and the frame.

An Inverted U-rack is a popular choice for city sidewalks. It is shaped like a tall letter U and stays out of the way of people walking. A Wave rack is like a long, curvy version of that U-shape. These can hold many more bikes at once. Some racks use a grid style with many vertical bars. These can be freestanding or anchored into the ground.

Other designs, like the Bollard style, use short vertical posts. These posts might have a ring on top to hold the bike.

History shows us how these designs have changed over time. Early models were often quite simple and not very secure. Some were just grooves in concrete or metal ladders. Cyclists called these "wheel benders" because they could damage the wheels.

A much better version is the Sheffield rack. This design comes from the city of Sheffield in England. The citizens there had old gas piping they did not need. Local cyclists suggested turning that pipe into bike stands. They bent the metal into square arches and set them in concrete. This was a huge improvement for locking bike frames safely.

Different cities around the world use many different types of stands. In Toronto, Canada, they have used post and ring racks since 1984.

These use a steel post with a cast aluminium ring on top. In Amsterdam, you will see many two-tiered stands. These allow bikes to be parked very close together.

This works because the handlebars are at different heights. In some places, like London, you might see double-decker racks. These use two levels to save space in crowded stations. Some even use hydraulic pistons to help lift the bikes up.

Bicycle racks are built to fit specific needs in different places. Some locations use Class I standards for long-term parking.

These are found at places like libraries or schools. They often have weather protection to keep the bikes dry. Class II racks are for shorter trips, like visiting a park. These are usually placed near restaurants or picnic areas. You might even see decorative racks in fun places.
