Bicycle boulevard

technology Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A bicycle boulevard is a special kind of street designed for people on bikes. You might also hear them called neighborhood greenways or neighborways. These streets are made to be low-speed roads that feel safe for cyclists. They aim to give priority to people riding bicycles instead of through-going cars. This helps make cycling more comfortable for everyone. It is a low-cost way for cities to connect many different streets.

These boulevards work by changing how traffic moves on a street. They use traffic calming tools to make it hard for cars to drive fast. One example is a diverter, which is a barrier that forces cars to turn. These barriers let bikes and people walk straight through the path. Some boulevards also use bright colors on the road to show where to ride. In the Netherlands, the cycling part of the road is marked in red. Drivers can still use the non-colored part to pass a cyclist safely.

Many cities have helped create these paths over the years. Palo Alto was the first city in the United States to build one. They named it after Ellen Fletcher, who was a famous bike activist. In Minneapolis, a grant from the federal government helped build the Bryant Avenue boulevard. The City of Wilmington used a grant to build North Carolina's first one. In Albuquerque, the first New Mexico boulevard opened on April 14, 2009. This path runs along Silver Avenue and Mountain Road.

Bicycle boulevards are found in many different countries around the world. You can see them in Canada, Germany, Belgium, and Denmark. In Spain, they are known as Fahrradstrasse. Sweden introduced their version, called Cykelgata, in December 2020.

Even New Zealand uses them as neighborhood greenways. In the Netherlands, the streets are called fietsstraten. These designs help cities like Amsterdam have very high rates of cycling. Many of these places use these streets to link different bike paths together.

These streets help people who might be nervous about riding in traffic. They are perfect for younger riders or people who are new to cycling. By making the streets quieter, cities encourage more people to leave their cars at home. This can lead to a better environment for everyone in the neighborhood. It is a way to make the streets work for people, not just machines. Seeing a red lane or a special sign tells you a new path is there.
