A bike lane is a special part of a road made just for people on bicycles.

These lanes help cyclists move safely through traffic. In the United States, they are often called class II bikeways. They are marked by a solid white stripe on the pavement.

Some lanes are class III bicycle routes. These use signs to suggest a path for riders. These signs urge people to share the road with cars. Other lanes are class IV separated bike ways. These use a physical barrier to keep motor vehicles away.

This barrier might be a line of parked cars or plastic posts.

There are many ways these lanes work.

Conventional lanes sit right next to cars with very little space. Buffered bike lanes are different because they provide a buffer space. This extra space sits between the vehicles and the cyclists. In the United Kingdom, some lanes are strictly for cycles. These are marked with a solid white line to stop motor vehicles. Other lanes in the UK are advisory. These use a broken white line. This means motor vehicles are permitted to enter the lane. In Belgium, cycle lanes are marked by two parallel broken white lines. These lanes are not wide enough for motor vehicles to use.

People have been studying how these lanes affect cities for a long time.

The United Nations Environment Programme says we need more lanes soon. They suggest there should be ten times more lanes by 2030 than in 2020. In the United States, the Department of Transportation sets rules for these lanes. They use a guide called the MUTCD to set standards. This guide tells cities how to use symbols and arrows. It also says how wide a lane should be. Most lanes are between 5 and 7 feet wide. These rules help make sure lanes look the same across different places.

Research shows that these lanes make a big difference for safety and money.

A 2019 study found that cities with separated lanes had 44% fewer road deaths. They also had 50% fewer serious injuries from crashes. In Toronto, Canada, a study looked at Bloor Street in 2019. Experts replaced 136 parking spots with a bike lane. This change helped local shops by increasing customer spending. It also increased the number of customers on the street. This shows that bike lanes can have a positive effect on local businesses.

Many places around the world are building more of these paths.

In Tokyo, Japan, some lanes allow bikes to go in two directions. These lanes often separate pedestrians from the road as well. In the city of Fukuoka, they use many different types of paths. Some paths are shared between walkers and bikers. In China, the city of Nanjing has protected and unprotected lanes. Many junctions in China are designed so bikes do not touch cars. In Boston, Massachusetts, the city has a goal called Go Boston 2030. This goal is to grow their bike network for everyone to use.
