Cycling infrastructure is everything built to help people ride bicycles.

It includes paths, lanes, and even special signs or parking racks. Some of these routes are built just for bikes. Others are parts of roads that cars also use. Having good paths makes riding much safer and easier. When a city has many good routes, more people choose to travel by bike.

There are many ways to design these paths. Some use only paint on the road to mark a bike lane.

Other paths use physical barriers like bollards or curbs to stay separate from cars. These are called cycle tracks.

Some paths are shared with people walking. These are often called greenways or multi-use paths.

Some streets are even made for bikes first, like a bicycle boulevard. These streets slow down cars to help riders move through easily.

The history of these paths has changed over time. It started shortly after the bike boom of the 1880s.

Back then, people built the first short stretches of special paths. Later, cars became very common in the mid-20th century. This caused many people to stop using bikes for travel. However, cycling began to make a comeback starting in the 1970s. Now, many cities are building new ways to help riders.

Different places have different rules and measurements for their paths. In the Netherlands, a path should be at least 2 meters wide.

If more than 150 bikes use it every hour, it should be 2.5 meters wide. Cities like Utrecht and 's-Hertogenbosch also use this 2-meter rule. In North America, cities like Montreal and Davis, California, were early leaders.

They have used paths with barriers for many decades. Other big cities like New York and San Francisco are adding them now.

You might see these ideas in your own town. Many paths are built on old land, like disused railways.

These paths can act like parks or paths for wildlife. You might also see special lights at crossings.

These signals help riders know when it is safe to go. Just like a sidewalk is for walking, these paths create a special space for moving. They help connect where people live to where they need to go.
