A shared-use path is a special way to move around.

These paths are made for both walkers and cyclists. They are also called mixed-use or multi-use pathways. Some paths might let people use inline skates too. Most paths have a hard surface like concrete or asphalt. They may also use crushed aggregate that is packed down firmly. These paths are different from cycle tracks. A cycle track is mostly for bikes. A shared-use path is designed to include pedestrians as well.

There are different ways these paths can work. Some paths are segregated, which means they are split into two parts.

A painted line or a different surface can mark the split. Some paths use tactile paving to help people who are blind. This paving helps them feel where the different sections are. On busy trails, paths might have separate lanes for different speeds. This helps people avoid bumping into each other. Using these paths can help save space in narrow streets. They are also good for areas that are sensitive to the environment.

People have studied how these paths work for a long time. In the United States, a guide from 1999 defines these paths. This guide is called the AASHTO Guide for the Development of Bicycle Facilities. It says these paths should be separate from cars. They should use a barrier or an open space to stay apart. In the United Kingdom, the Department for Transport has rules for them. Before 2022, the Highway Code did not give much advice to walkers or bikers. The new 2023 edition now gives guidance to both groups.

There are many real examples of these paths around the world. In the UK, there are paths called bridleways. These are open to horse riders and cyclists. Milton Keynes has a huge system called the redway system. This network has many paths that avoid busy grid roads. Some paths are built on old train tracks. These are known as rail trails. In Budapest, you can see signs for shared paths on the road.

These paths help people travel through the city safely.

Even though they are helpful, sharing a path can be a hard job. Some people find it confusing to know who has priority. A study by the Institute for Chartered Engineers found this was true. Walkers might not know if they should treat the path like a road. They might wonder if they should face oncoming traffic. Cyclists might also have to give way to cars at side roads. This happens because paths next to highways can look like sidewalks to drivers. These disagreements can lead to complaints about speed or safety. It is important for everyone to understand how to share the space.
