Walking is a way that many animals move across the land.

It is one of the main ways legged animals travel. Most animals walk at a slower speed than they run. Scientists call the way a person walks an inverted pendulum gait. This means the body vaults over a stiff limb with each step. This way of moving works for many creatures. Even tiny arthropods with six or eight legs use walking to move.

There is a clear way to tell walking apart from running. In walking, only one foot leaves the ground at a time. This creates a period called double-support where both feet touch the ground. Running is different because both feet leave the ground during each step. You can also watch the center of mass, which is the middle of the body.

During a walk, this center point reaches its highest height in the middle of a step. In running, the center of mass is at its lowest point during that same moment. This rule works well on level ground.

Walking has been part of life for a very long time. Some scientists think walking began underwater with fish that could breathe air. These fish might have walked on the ocean floor.

This may have led to the many land animals we see today. For humans, walking on two legs was a very important change. Footprints found in Kenya show our ancestors may have walked like us 3 million years ago. Walking on two legs helped our ancestors save a lot of energy. This made it much easier to travel than it was for other primates.

Humans have many special body parts that help us walk well. We have long legs and long Achilles tendons. These parts help us save energy while we move. Our hipbones are also shaped in a way that helps us. Even a small child can walk on their own by 11 months old.

Most people walk at a speed of about 5.0 kilometers per hour at crosswalks. In Japan, the standard walking speed is 80 meters per minute. Champion racewalkers can go much faster over long distances.

Walking for 30 to 60 minutes a day can be very good for you. Some studies show that taking more steps can help people live longer. You can even use tools to change your walk. Nordic walking uses special poles to work more muscles in your arms and chest. This can increase the energy you use by up to 46 percent.
