These paths are not for cars, bikes, or horses. You can find them in many different places. Some are in the middle of busy cities. Others go through quiet forests or high mountains.

Some paths are in parks or near the ocean. They help people move through the world on foot.

How a footpath works depends on where it is. In a city, a path might be paved with stone or brick. These are often called alleys or lanes. In hilly places, these paths might use many steps.

In the countryside, a path might just be grass or dirt. It may have a gate or a stile to cross a fence. Some paths even use stepping stones to cross water.

Many paths have very old histories. Long ago, people used them to walk to work or school. Some paths were made for people going on religious journeys. These are called pilgrimage routes, like St. Olav's Way in Norway.

Other paths were used for very serious jobs. For example, corpse roads helped move bodies to a cemetery. These were common in places like the English Lake District.

There are many important facts about these routes. In the United Kingdom, there are 427,301 public footpaths. These make up about 81% of all rights of way. In England and Wales, a definitive map shows exactly where they are.

Groups like the Open Spaces Society help protect these paths. This group was founded as the Commons Preservation Society. They work to keep open spaces safe for everyone to use.

Today, footpaths link to the ways we enjoy life. Many people use them for fun or for exercise. Long paths can be joined to make a huge trail. The Pacific Crest Trail in the US is one such example. In cities, paths like the Grand Concourse in Canada connect parks and rivers.
