Some people go on multi-day trips called backpacking when they carry camping gear. If the plants are very thick, hikers might try bushwhacking. This means pushing through dense forests or thick bushes to move forward. In very hard cases, a person might use a machete to clear a path.

One famous example is the Camino de Santiago in Spain. This is a network of paths leading to a cathedral in Galicia. Many people walk these routes for spiritual growth or as a retreat. Other paths, like the Abraham Path, follow ancient journeys through the Near East.

Even today, many modern hiking trails follow these old religious routes.

History shows that people have climbed mountains for different reasons. The Roman Emperor Hadrian climbed Mount Etna in 125 CE.
