It is a total-body version of walking. People can do it to stay healthy or as a sport. It uses specially designed poles to help you move. These poles are similar to the ones used for skiing. This activity helps people use more of their muscles. It is a fun way to exercise outside.

Using poles changes how your body works. You apply force to the poles with every single stride. This uses your chest, arms, and stomach muscles. It also works your shoulders and your back. This can make your heart rate go up more than normal walking. One study found it can use 46% more energy. This makes it a very good way to build fitness.

This activity has a long history in Finland. People call it Finnish sauvakävely. It started as a way for skiers to train when there was no snow. In 1979, Mauri Repo wrote about it in a book. He called it a part of cross-country skiing training. Later, a company called Exerstrider made special poles in 1988. Then, a company named Exel used the name 'Nordic Walking' in 1999.

There are many types of poles to choose from. Some poles are one piece and very strong. Others are telescoping, which means they have parts that twist to change length. Most poles have wrist straps to help you. These straps mean you do not have to grip the handle tightly. You can also change the tips on the bottom. Use rubber tips for hard roads and metal tips for snow.

To do it well, you must use a good technique. Your arms, legs, and body should move in a rhythm. This rhythm is like a very fast, vigorous walk. If you move your arms a lot, your stride gets longer. A long pole thrust makes your pelvis and torso swing more. Using the INWA technique is said to be the most effective way. This helps you get the most benefit from your walk.
