Rowing is a way to move a boat using long sticks called oars.

This is different from paddling a canoe or kayak. In rowing, the oars are attached to the boat at a fixed point. This attachment lets the oar act like a lever. The rower pulls the handle to push the blade through the water. This motion creates a force that pushes the boat forward.

There are many ways to set up a rowing boat. Most people sit on seats called thwarts and face the back. To help them pull harder, rowers often use a footrest called a stretcher. The oars rest in special holders to keep them in place. Some boats use wooden pegs called thole pins. Other boats use metal fittings called rowlocks or oarlocks.

In racing boats, rowers even use sliding seats. This allows them to use their strong leg muscles to help.

People have used oars to travel for a very long time. We can trace rowing back to ancient Egypt. Archaeologists found a model of a rowing boat in a tomb. This model was from the 18th or 19th century BC.

In ancient Greece, large ships called galleys were very important. One famous type of ship was the trireme. A trireme could have as many as 170 rowers! These rowers used leather cushions to slide on their seats.

Rowing looks different depending on where you are in the world. In Venice, Italy, people use a style called voga alla veneta.

In this style, the rower stands up and faces forward. They use a special wooden tool called a fórcola to hold the oar. In Slovenia, people use a boat called a pletna to row forward.

It is also a very fast sport. Competitive rowers use special, narrow boats called shells. These boats are built to move through the water very easily.
