Rowing is a way to move a boat using oars.

Unlike paddling, oars are attached to the boat. They work like a lever to push the water. This motion helps the boat move forward.

People have rowed for thousands of years. Archaeologists found a model of a rowing boat in an ancient Egyptian tomb.

In ancient Greece, people used large ships called galleys. Some ships, called triremes, had 170 rowers! These rowers used leather cushions to slide on their seats. This let them use their leg strength to pull.

There are many ways to row. Most people sit and face the back of the boat. But in some places, rowers face forward. In Venice, Italy, rowers stand up in gondolas.

They use a special wooden tool called a fórcola to hold the oar. In Vietnam, some people even row using their feet!
