People do it for fun or for sport. It is a very old activity. Some think it began in the Altai Mountains. The word "ski" comes from an old word for wood.

Long ago, people used one long pole. They even used two different skis on their feet. One ski was long for sliding. The other was short for kicking. Later, people used two poles.

There are two main ways to ski. Alpine skiing is also called downhill skiing. You use ski lifts to go up hills. Your boots stay fixed at the toe and the heel.

Nordic skiing is another way. In this style, boots only attach at the toes. This lets your heels lift up. This helps with cross-country skiing or ski jumping. You can even try Telemark skiing. This uses a special turn from Norway. Some people even ski on grass or sand!
