Skiers must make very quick and short turns. They race between pairs of poles called gates. These gates often have red and blue colors.

In a men's race, there are 55 to 75 gates. Women race through 40 to 60 gates. To win, a skier must be very fast. The rules say both ski tips and feet must pass between the poles. If they do not, it is a fault.

In the past, gates were made of bamboo. They were very stiff. Now, gates are made of hard plastic. These new gates are hinged at the bottom. This lets skiers use a move called cross-blocking. A skier can hit the gate with their shins or hands. This knocks the gate out of the way.

The word slalom comes from Norway. It comes from words meaning a hillside track. Long ago, people even got points for good style. Today, the winner is decided by time alone. Slalom is a big part of the Winter Olympics.
