In Indian classical music, people follow special paths. These paths are called gharanas. The word gharana comes from the Hindi word 'ghar.' This means 'house.'

A gharana is a group of musicians. They are linked by their teachers or their style. This system helps them pass down musical secrets. It often follows the guru-shishya tradition. This is a way where a student learns from a teacher.

Each house has its own unique sound. Some gharanas focus on melody. For example, the Kirana gharana loves perfect notes. Other houses focus on rhythm. The Agra gharana uses powerful voices and rhythmic play. Some singers even practice long breaths. The Bhendibazaar gharana works hard on breath control. This lets them sing long parts in one breath.

There are many types of gharanas. Some are for singing. Others are for dancing or playing instruments like the tabla. Even the Patiala gharana is special. It combines styles from many different houses. This makes their music very versatile. Musicians might even borrow ideas from other houses to make their own style better. This keeps the music growing and changing.
