It is a cycle of beats that repeats. Think of it like a musical loop. This loop helps musicians play and dance together. It is one of the two main parts of Indian music. The other part is called raga, which is the melody.

Musicians use many ways to mark the beats. They might clap their hands or tap their arms. They can also use small metal cymbals. Some use drums to keep the rhythm.

Every tala has a set number of beats. These beats are called matras. The very first beat is the most important. It is called the sam.

Musicians always land on the sam to finish a musical phrase. Some talas are short. Others are very long. One tala can have 29 beats! This cycle can take 45 seconds to finish. In North India, a common tala is Teental. In South India, people often use Adi tala. These systems have different names. One is Hindustani and the other is Carnatic. They still share many of the same ideas.
