It is also called the Panchanga. People use it to find dates for festivals. It also helps with rituals for crops. Many Hindus all over the world use it today.

This system uses the sun and the moon. This is called a lunisolar calendar. A lunar year has about 354 days. A solar year has about 365 days. These two do not match up. To fix this, the calendar adds an extra month. This happens about every 32 or 33 months. It keeps festivals in the right season.

There are many different versions of this calendar. Some are used in North India and Nepal. These are called the Vikram Samvat. They focus on the moon. Other versions are used in South India. These focus more on the sun. One is the Tamil calendar. Another is the Malayalam calendar.

In Bali, people use a special version too. It is called the Balinese saka calendar. This system is very old. It has been used since Vedic times.
