Many people use a special way to track time. It is called a Buddhist calendar. This calendar is lunisolar. This means it uses both the moon and the sun. It helps people know when to hold big festivals.

People use this calendar in many places. You can find it in Thailand and Vietnam. It is also used in India and Sri Lanka. Some people use it for official things too. In Thailand, the Buddhist Era is used for official dates.

How does it work? The months follow the moon. Some months have 29 days. Other months have 30 days. A normal lunar year has 354 days. But a solar year has about 365 days. To fix this, the calendar adds extra months. These are called intercalary months. This keeps the moon and sun in sync.

Some versions use animal names for the years. There is a cycle of 12 animals. These include the Rat, the Ox, and the Tiger. In Cambodia and Laos, years also have numbers. This makes the calendar very detailed and special.
