It is a lunisolar calendar. This means it follows both the sun and the moon. Each month follows the phases of the moon. Most months have 29 or 30 days.

To stay in sync with the seasons, an extra month is added sometimes. This is called an intercalary month. The calendar also uses 24 solar terms. These terms track the sun and help people understand the weather. One very important time is the winter solstice. This is the shortest day of the year.

The calendar has a long history. Ancient people used a pole and a ruler to measure shadows. This helped them find the winter solstice. Many other cultures, like the Japanese and Koreans, used these same ideas. Today, the calendar is still very important. It helps people celebrate festivals like Chinese New Year. It also helps people pick good days for weddings. People even use it to know the best times for fishing and farming.
