language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Dongzhi is a special festival. It marks the winter solstice. This is the longest night of the year.

It usually falls between December 21 and December 23. In the Chinese calendar, it is the 22nd solar term. This means it is a specific time in the seasons.

Many people celebrate with their families. In China, families eat together to show they are united. They often eat tangyuan. These are sweet balls made of rice flour.

Some people also eat dumplings. A doctor named Zhang Zhongjing once shared dumplings to help the poor. He said they could keep ears warm in the cold.

Other places have their own ways to celebrate. In Korea, people eat red bean porridge called patjuk. In Japan, people might drink hot grapefruit water. In Taiwan, people eat warm foods like mutton hot pot. These foods help the body stay strong in winter.
