Earth has two poles. This means the solstice happens twice each year. In the Northern Hemisphere, it is in June. In the Southern Hemisphere, it is in December.

This day has the longest daylight. It also has the shortest night. The Sun stays at its highest point in the sky. At the poles, the Sun does not set at all. This is called continuous daylight.

People have celebrated this day for a long time. Many old stone sites line up with the Sun.
