Sunset

space Maturity 7-9 Next article →

A sunset happens when the Sun disappears below the horizon. This occurs because the Earth rotates, or spins, on its axis.

This happens about once every 24 hours for most people. However, near the North and South Poles, the Sun may not set at all for a whole day.

Sunsets look beautiful because of how light moves through the air. This is called Rayleigh scattering. When sunlight travels through the atmosphere, air molecules scatter the light. Blue and green colors scatter away easily. This leaves the long orange and red colors for us to see.

Sometimes, clouds catch these red colors and glow brightly.

After the Sun sets, the sky enters a time called twilight. Twilight has three stages. First is civil twilight. Then comes nautical twilight. The last stage is astronomical twilight.

Once the Sun is very deep below the horizon, it becomes night. The time of sunset changes throughout the year. This is due to the tilt of the Earth and its orbit around the Sun.
